Art classes are conducted 2 periods per week. Art students
learn the fundamentals and apply them through a variety of projects and
mediums. Homework is assigned weekly to keep those skills fresh. A working
field trip is scheduled each spring to the National Gallery of Art in Washington,
D.C. Their final design is their own creation done in the medium of their
choice. Many come in sometimes lacking confidence, but finish the course having
learned they can do something creative by the grace of God. Our Art Department
has produced many state and national level winners in the annual fine arts
competition.
Music
A variety of opportunities exist at school for students
to develop their musical talents. These include various musical groups,
ensembles, and choir. Additionally, both elementary and secondary students
(4-12) may participate in fine arts competition each spring. Students also
participate in several school-wide musical presentations each year. There
are several music stores in the local area from which instruments may be
purchased or rented. Students are required to make up any class work missed
as a result of a musical activity or lesson.
Handbell Choir
The Lord has continued to bless Evangel's handbell prgram since
its inception. We grew from a rudimentary two-octave group into a full
five-octave bell choir, with three octaves of handchimes. As a result, Evangel
has two full choirs: the advanced choir meets before school five days a week
and plays level IV music or above while the intermediate choir meets twice
a week, beginning with level I+ music and ending the year with level III.
Beginners who are
proficient in reading music may join the intermediate class; however, poor
readers of music need to take the beginner course which meets once or twice
a week as the schedules of students and staff coincide. In addition to
these groups, the instructor chooses up to six students from the advanced
choir to participate in a handbell ensemble for ODACS competition. This group
meets two or more times a week as schedules allow. In order to be competitive
the ensemble faces the challenge of mastering advanced ringing techniques
such as shellying, four-in-hand, and multiple bell switches and passes.
Since
the handbell program began, we have sent two choirs and three ensembles
to the AACS National competition. In this 2005-2006 year the Lord has again
blessed both the choir and the ensemble with victories at state competition.
In April 2006, the handbell ensemble placed third in the national competition
at Bob Jones University.
Choral Music
Evangel offers a comprehensive choral
music program. General music classes are provided for all students in grades
1-6. Emphasis is placed on music reading and appreciation skills as well
as group singing. A Junior High Choir program is offered to students in
grades 7-8, and a Senior High Choir program is available for students in
grades 9-12. Students participate in several school functions throughout
the year, and compete in the annual ODACS competitions held each spring
in both individual and group events. Evangel has sent a number of successful
state competitors to the national AACS High School competitions over the
past few years.
Private music lessons are sometimes available (as time
and staffing allow), and Evangel hopes to begin private violin instruction
in the near future.
